ALIVE lives on

nel13

If you’re a big Daft Punk fan, chances are you’ve been following the saga of the so-called “Official” Fan DVD of Alive.

Long story short, Daft Punk has insisted they will not release an official DVD of their Alive tour, so it has been up to fans to put together their own DVDs.

Mathieu Bernier of Paris took it upon himself to make the “Official” Fan DVD, by cutting together a version of Alive (Paris 2007) from about 40 different hi-res video cameras. For the past several months, he has had a website up dedicated to the project called The World Is Daft, where he said the DVD would be released as a downloadable torrent on 12 June 2008 (marking the one-year anniversary of Paris’ Alive show). He is also streaming his entire DVD on his Youtube page, however it is split into 13 different videos.

Last week, he broke our hearts by announcing that he was no longer releasing the DVD, because he was getting too much legal trouble from the record companies that represent the samples used in Daft Punk’s music. He stressed that he never heard anything from Daft Punk or EMI.

On 14 June 2008, Bernier streamed his entire DVD live on The World Is Daft for one day only. (My homey Zerblogger managed to save the streaming file in his internet cache, so hopefully we can transfer that FLV file into a movie file…)

Thankfully though, someone in Bootleg La La Land (not Bernier) captured all of Bernier’s Youtube videos and put them together as a DVD movie, maintaining a high picture and sound quality (which makes it 3.6 gigs). You can download the torrent on Mininova, which will get you the entire Video TS folder. (On his Youtube page, Bernier writes that this does not represent his final version. Well, whatever dude, we’ll take what we can get.)

I watched the DVD last night and all I could think was, “FINALLY.”

Enjoy!

Update 21 June 2008: Thankfully there were people out there savvy enough to capture the entire FLV file from when Bernier streamed the show. The FLV file can be found here. You can find free software online to convert the FLV file to an AVI, MP4, MPEG, etc.

I burned this version to DVD and it looks amazing, much better than the 3.6 gig Youtube-copy-and-paste version mentioned above. Also, many of the editing decisions do seem improved from previous versions.

Mathieu, thank you for putting this DVD together! Many of us will treasure it for a long time.

very busy p

According to In the Mix, the very busy Pedro Winter is no longer Daft Punk’s manager.

“I’ve stopped working with them really recently, because I want to focus and concentrate on Ed Banger and my artists, and my own career as Busy P.”

Read the full story. Oh yeah, Daft Punk are in the studio recording some new stuff. Bang.

In other Daft Punk news, the Ultimate Fan DVD of Alive will be unleashed in 16 days. Snap!
